It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Dr. Joy Pancubila Ambos, a remarkable training officer, a dedicated family man and a friend to many. His passing has left a void that is hard to fill, but his legacy will remain in our hearts forever.
Dr. Joy was a man of many dimensions. To those of us fortunate enough to have worked with him, he was a source of both laughter and guidance. His humor was infectious no matter how tough the day and his jokes could always lighten the mood. His ability to bring joy into even the most stressful moments is something we will always cherish.
However, beyond his playful nature was a strict, disciplined leader who pushed us to be our best. Dr. Joy’s standards were high and he never compromised on consistency. He demanded excellence from his residents, not through harsh words but by setting an example of dedication and professionalism. His expectation was simple: respect for the process, respect for the work, and above all, respect for the senior consultants who shaped our careers. He instilled in us that respect wasn’t just a formality but the foundation of the profession we had chosen.
While his training style was firm, those who worked closely with him knew the depth of his character. Outside the hospital, he had a passion for motorcycles, a guilty pleasure that brought him joy and freedom. His love for the open road was something he would often share with a glint in his eye, as if he were inviting us into his world, one where there was always room for adventure, even in the midst of a demanding career.
But at the core of Dr. Joy’s life was his love for his family. He was a devoted son and father, and a loving husband - providing for his family with unwavering dedication. As a caring Kuya and Uncle to his relatives in both Iloilo and General Santos City, he offered steadfast support - helping them pursue their education and assisting them in countless ways. He was the kind of man who balanced his professional life with his personal life, always making sure that his family felt loved and cared for.
Dr. Joy’s passing is a great loss, not only to those of us who had the privilege of learning from him but also to the countless lives he touched throughout his career. He was a mentor, a father figure, a friend and a guiding force. While we will miss his presence, his lessons—on discipline, respect, humor, and love—will continue to guide us through the challenges ahead.
Rest in peace, Dr. Joy. You will forever be remembered with gratitude, admiration and fondness.
